The pillows are snow-free right now — no SWE left on the ridge. That is September in this basin: last winter's water is already in the river, not still sitting in the mountains.

The lake

Lake Tahoe is a reservoir with a legal ceiling: about 6,229 feet. A dam at Tahoe City lets water out under the Truckee River Operating Agreement. What leaves the lake is this river.

The river

The Truckee leaves Tahoe City, cuts through the canyon, and crosses Reno. Same water. Two gauges.

At Reno the river is moving 371 cubic feet past the gauge every second — a late-summer pulse, not the spring rise a spawning fish would need.

The terminus

The river does not reach the ocean. It ends at Pyramid Lake. The cui-ui lives in exactly one place on Earth — this lake — and every spring it waits at the river mouth for flow high enough to swim upstream and spawn.

That is the answer to the opening question. Snow on the Sierra is, months later, the water that fish watches for.

The air

The same basin traps smoke. At night a temperature inversion settles over the Truckee Meadows; wildfire haze builds until daytime wind flushes the valley.
